Good questions, but I think the first two are in a separate class than the third.

Being unable to meet all of the challenges of the brave new world independently would only be crippling if you were really on your own. If you were in the Central Park community or even New Eden you would benefit from the collective skill and in your own way contribute something useful. I can't make cheese or bread but I can set a bone. On my own that's not a huge benefit but in a community it becomes a valuable commodity.

As for the last question that's a little more difficult. If you've given up on mankind - it makes sense to let the babies die and the prisoners rot. But if the population really is down to 1%, every life becomes valuable from a survival of the species standpoint. Tough call though since your resources would be severly limited.

Here's my response to your first question:

Bread and cheese aren't exactly necessities. And as a result they will be gone forever within a year. Wheat has been genetically modified over the last few thousand years to have their seeds stay on the stem. Unless someone physically cuts the seeds off and plants them the plant will die without reproducing. After the first winter most fields will die out. Cows have also been genetically modified. They produce gallons of milk, and if they don't the pain of full udders can kill them.

But mainly, the real reason bread and cheese will die out is because they are too complicated, time consuming, and expensive. Wheat fields are too large and yield too little actual food when compared to a field of fruits and vegatables. And cows eat more food then they produce.

I'd imagine that the farm of afterworld would grow fruits, vegatables, and potatoes that harvest multiple times a year. The only animals would be sheep for wool and horses as work animals.

I guess I have worked different farms than you. Seen oodles of wild wheat growing...dropped by birds, animals and humans...and it will continue to do so. Wheat does reproduce itself.
Cheese is not hard to make. Been there, done that, got the gouda

The cows on the big commercial farms will die from not being milked...BUT many, many people are already seeing the folly in abandoning the *old breeds* and there is a resurgence of interest in raising and maintaining *endangered domestic breeds* of livestock and poultry. (see www.albc-usa.org for more info) These breeds will not die as a result of missing a week of being milked. Check out the Irish Dexters. Awesome, compact animals. Very *food efficient*.
And you forget, goats milk and goats milk cheese. (YUMMM!)

I am currently looking for property for my homestead, which I intend to buy next year. I will have cows, sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, etc...
So, if The Fall comes (or any other SHTF situation), I'll be baking bread and spreading it with fresh creamy butter...mmmmm

good questions

1. yes i can, but hardtack is easier to make and lasts a bit longer.

2. no i dont know how to splice it in, but you really would'nt need
to do that just run a power cord from the generator in through a
window and hook it to one of those multiple outlet things...then
you run run a few things off it up to your generators limit for short
periods of time. no electrical school required..

3. to BIG a problem and NO solution....under the premise of 1%
of the population being alive.. say in N.Y.. that would be roughly
140,000 people you'd never be able to find everyone nor take
on the care of them as sorry to say most will be sheeple...

so like one guy said...dont go looking for trouble and it wont find you.

grim yes....

BTW i think the population numbers are way lower then 1 percent
given how many were alive in the park for the size of NY. I'm thinking
it might be as low as .01% just a guess though...

if you can read this, you're probably a republican...

I would amend that to "Don't go looking for trouble and be prepared for it when it finds you."

Making Bread
Just need a hand crank printing press and ink. Now making paper ………
Seriously, cooking skills are not difficult, but it would take most people a lot of trial and error to cook from real ‘scratch’. I grew up on a farm in a large family, so we learned cooking, canning and gardening.

Generator
Useless with active EMP pulsing

But for basic survival mode
I have not wired one to a house circuit. However I have rewired a few houses, so if I was going to wire a small generator to a house circuit I would either
1) disconnect the wires from the circuit breaker and splice it into the generator
2) or use a simple extension cord for a few items.
And I would never run one inside a house.
Most portable generators are small, so I would limit their use to essential items in this order: Fridge, Freezer, Water Pump.
Wiring a large permanent generator to a house circuit is bigger undertaking ….. it is good to have a few electrician friends

Saving all
Hmmm …. When in survival mode, you try to survive. If you are traveling to a destination, you make do with what have. Do not swallow the Kool-Aid or the Blue Gullible Pill.
If you decide to remain/settle in an area, then you have a need to work with your neighbors, as few or many as there are.
If you are trying to save the world, remember that people locked in areas have a matter of 1 week to survive without water. Maybe public water would last a little while, but maybe not. So any hospitals, prisons, or wards that are not checked/emptied in one week might only have bodies to bury.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not sure of the post before that said beer lasts for years in cold storage root cellar (54F), maybe Butwiper or the Beast would, but not homemade beer. No chemical preservatives for the brew.
One of the more important items to own is yeast, as it is the building block of bread, cheese, and beer. You can preserve it by keeping a small clump of moist sourdough as starter.
Written Sources of how to survive without electricity are many, and may be found in most libraries. Books on camping, survival, old farming, gardening, Home remedies, raw medicine/herbs, wildlife, and hunting are still plentiful, as people still look whist-fully on the good ole days
Owning those books might be pretty valuable.
A few examples of books still in print:
Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss
Tillers International sells books and gives classes
Primitive Ways Book
The Theories site isn't just for Theories, there are a load of useful resources links there as well as a new 'evidence' section, links to websites found to be related to the AW universe, and a bunch of other stuff.
You're post was added to the Sid6.7 Real Tips under the Resources link.
